About Us

Welcome to The Rocking Horse!

We're a family owned toy shop run by mother and daughter team Marlyn and Amanda. The Rocking Horse started life as a tiny stall in a Farmers Market selling hand-made children's name plaques. We thought a few wooden toys would be a lovely addition to our stall and a few years (and a lot more toys) later, here we are with our lovely little toy shop in the Lake District!

Our name 'The Rocking Horse' comes from my own childhood - all I ever wanted when I was little was a rocking horse and I couldn't believe it one Christmas morning when I came down stairs to find Santa had brought one! Our family have so many memories of that rocking horse, and she's still safely tucked away in the loft today. And that's what 'The Rocking Horse' is all about - toys that create really magical memories that families can treasure for years to come!
Specialising in wooden and traditional toys, we're delighted to offer beautiful toys from some incredible brands including Brio, Hape, Bigjigs, Melissa and Doug, Lanka Kade and so many more. We're passionate about toys that spark imagination and encourage creative play - you won't find any battery powered toys in our range!
Of course we offer a wide range of rocking horses too! Our rocking horses are from Yorkshire based company 'Little Bird Told Me' who make the most beautiful rocking horses we've ever seen! The full range is on the website, but we have lots of them out on display in the shop too so you can feel how well made they are and try them out for size!

We are lucky to be situated in Bowness-on-Windermere in the heart of the Lake District, within walking distance of the lake, and alongside an incredible range of independent shops, cafe's and restaurants. There's nothing like seeing our toys in real life, where you can pick them up and play, so if you're in the Lakes we'd love you to come and see for yourself!

Our website has just a small selection of the range we offer in store, so if you can't find what you're looking for, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
